Our Programs - Birds

Six pilot programs based in Calgary, dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and educating Canadians about companion and domesticated birds.
At this early stage, CAS is building a strong foundation of care, transparency, and community engagement โ€” one bird at a time.

Making a Difference

Through our six core programs, we provide comprehensive rescue, rehabilitation, education, and community engagement

๐Ÿฉบ Rescue & Rehabilitation

At the heart of the Canadian Avian Societyโ€™s mission is compassion for birds in need.
Our Rescue & Rehabilitation program provides a safe refuge for surrendered, neglected, or injured companion birds such as parrots, cockatiels, finches, and pigeons. Each intake receives a health check, nutritious food, clean housing, and a calm environment to recover both physically and emotionally.
Working closely with a local partner veterinary clinic, CAS ensures every bird receives the treatment and care needed to regain strength and confidence. Beyond medical recovery, our volunteers focus on socialization and behavioral support to help birds adapt to future homes or long-term sanctuary living.
We document each birdโ€™s progress and maintain transparent records of intake, care, and outcomes. Rehabilitation continues until the bird is fully recovered and ready for adoption or permanent placement.

๐Ÿ•Š Adoption & Rehoming

Our Adoption & Rehoming program ensures that every rehabilitated or surrendered bird finds a loving, responsible home. The process begins with an application and interview, followed by education on proper bird care and welfare.
CAS conducts a careful match between bird and adopter, prioritizing long-term welfare over convenience. Each adoption includes a formal transfer of ownership, as outlined in our By-laws, ensuring full rights belong to CAS until a new home is approved.
Adoption fees are minimal and only used to recover costs for food, housing, and medical care. We do not breed, sell, or profit from any adoption โ€” every dollar supports future rescues.
After placement, we maintain contact with adopters to provide guidance and ensure ongoing welfare.

๐Ÿ“š Education & Outreach

Education is the foundation of prevention. CAS develops workshops, digital materials, and school presentations that teach the essentials of responsible bird ownership โ€” proper nutrition, cage hygiene, enrichment, and behavioral understanding.
By connecting with schools, families, and new bird owners in Calgary, we aim to reduce neglect and improve welfare for companion birds. We also share short educational videos and posts through social media to reach wider audiences and encourage positive, humane care.
Every education session helps people build empathy and knowledge โ€” ensuring fewer birds end up in distress.

๐Ÿ’– Therapeutic & Inclusive Programs

Birds can bring calm, joy, and emotional connection โ€” and CAS is exploring this benefit through its Therapeutic & Inclusive Programs.
These pilot sessions allow seniors, children, and individuals with disabilities to safely observe or interact with companion birds under volunteer supervision. Through gentle encounters and educational talks, participants experience emotional comfort while learning about avian welfare.
CAS ensures that every session is conducted safely โ€” for both people and birds โ€” with supervision and clear welfare standards. The long-term goal is to develop a regular, accessible program that supports community wellbeing through bird companionship.

๐Ÿ”ฌ Research & Welfare Improvement

Continuous learning drives better care. Our Research & Welfare Improvement program focuses on understanding the needs of companion birds in domestic environments.
CAS collaborates with local veterinarians and experienced bird owners to gather small-scale data on nutrition, enrichment, housing, and rehabilitation outcomes. This information is documented internally and shared publicly through reports, online posts, and future educational materials.
The program aims to refine rescue and care practices, promote transparency, and contribute to a broader understanding of avian welfare in Canada.

๐Ÿค Community Engagement & Volunteering

Volunteers are the heart of CAS. Our Community Engagement & Volunteering program invites Calgarians to contribute their time and skills toward bird care, transport, fundraising, and education.
Through teamwork and compassion, volunteers help with daily operations โ€” from feeding and cleaning to event coordination and outreach. CAS provides basic training and fosters an inclusive environment that values learning and community spirit.
We also seek partnerships with local schools, small businesses, and community groups to host awareness events and build stronger connections between people and birds.

Transparency & Public Benefit

The Canadian Avian Society operates as a Calgary-based nonprofit focused on companion and domesticated birds only.

All programs are volunteer-led, and funds are used exclusively for charitable purposes.
